This endlessly artistic Nishikigoi carp is painted by Japanese painter Tokunaga Haruho.


"Presented Hand-dyed Yuzen Koi Kyo Nishiki" depicts the graceful figure of a Nishikigoi carp in a realistic style, created by the brush of Japanese painter Tokunaga Haruho. The distinctive hues of the Nishikigoi are dyed using a seven-color gradient, and the entire scale is decorated with fan-shaped gold. To make it look more realistic, each Nishikigoi is dyed with a different pattern - black, red, or blue. The streamers, with a theme of water and sky, feature a traditional Japanese indigo gradient and are dotted with auspicious thousand paper cranes. The material is a special fabric with a three-dimensional cross weave. This new material shines silvery white when exposed to sunlight.

　


　


Tokunaga Haruho, founder of Tokunaga Koinobori, is a representative Japanese painter from Okayama.

 

Under the tutelage of Ito Shinsui, who is famous for his portraits of beautiful women, Haruho shocked the art world with her unprecedentedly elegant and refined carp streamers, created with the delicate brushwork unique to Japanese painting and an unparalleled worldview.

Representative carp streamers include "Celebratory Carp, Auspicious Omen" and "Presented Hand-dyed Yuzen Carp, Kyo Nishiki."
A hugely popular work that continues to be a long-selling hit across the ages.

　





　
When people think of "Tokunaga Koi Nobori," many will think of "Kyo Nishiki," a carp streamer with a design that has not faded since its release and that continues to be a long-selling product.
The polyester jacquard fabric is light and lively. The carp swims powerfully and beautifully. The gold leaf is applied to the scales, and combined with the sheen and color of the fabric, it creates a sense of depth and power. As the name "Yuzen" suggests, the hand-printed designs by artisans, which recreate classic carp faces and Nishikigoi (colored carp) designs by Japanese painters, are beautiful and carry the tradition. Their presence and elegance are said to be universal symbols of carp streamers.

The "Kyōzuru Fukinagashi" streamer features a simple design of a thousand paper cranes painted against a background of varying shades of blue, but it balances beautifully with the vibrant colors of the Kyoto Nishiki. Since it's a two-tone blue background, if you also include the family crest and name in blue, the blue gradation will flutter and sway, like the sky floating above the impressive carp streamer. The white background shines silver-white against the fabric, making the family crest appear to stand out.

1992/Antarctica

The Kyozuru streamers and Kyoto Nishikigoi streamers were written with messages of support from the people of "Kohitsujien" in Maizuru City. With the cooperation of the 32nd Antarctic Research Expedition, the children's dreams came true and carp streamers flew in the Antarctic. When members of the Belgian expedition heard that "carp were swimming in the sky," they came to see the streamers, and it was the first time that carp streamers had flown in Antarctica.






1996/France
"Tokunaga Koi Swims in Paris" was exhibited at the 1996 Paris Collection by Paris-based Japanese designer Shinichiro Arakawa. The traditional Japanese culture of carp streamers was vividly featured in the international fashion show, and Tokunaga Koi, adorned by models, gracefully danced on stage, captivating the audience.
　
　
2003/France
In May 2003, the Franco-Japanese Cultural Center in Paris, France, which introduces Japanese culture, held the "Koinobori 2003" event to express wishes for peace. For about a month, 1,000 carp streamers were flown in various locations around Paris, conveying Japanese traditional culture and wishes for peace to the people of France.
