History and Background
Revival as Reproduction
Glass that inherits the memory of the land and connects it to modern life
Wake's blown glass began when the town invited glass artist Ryozo Shintani, a native of Wake Town, to come.
For over twenty years, Wake Town in Okayama Prefecture had been collecting empty bottles, melting them, and reviving them as recycled glass.
Classes were held with Ryozo Shintani at the center, works were created, and a time was fostered for people and the land to connect through glass.
It was not merely recycling, but a culture of craftsmanship that breathed within the land's cycle.
Eventually, with the passage of time, that light gradually diminished.
In "Hare to Kurasu," with the help of a few students who remembered that time,
we once again faced Wake Glass and breathed new life into the dying flame.
This is how the reproduced
"Wake Mingei Blown Glass" came to be.
The Thickness Born from Hand-Blowing
Waki Glass is not made by pouring glass into a mold,
but by a craftsman winding glass onto the tip of a blowpipe and blowing air into it, known as "blown glass."
While turning and expanding it,
the craftsman shapes the glass while interacting with its temperature.
This process creates
a slight undulation at the rim and a subtle weight at the base. It's neither too thin nor too thick,
providing just the right presence for everyday life.
An undulating outline and a rich translucence. That thickness leads to the reliability of everyday use:
