When to put up and take down New Year's decorations

When are New Year's decorations displayed?

December 13th - January 15th
(Beginning of the New Year - Little New Year)

In Japan, December 13th is designated as a miscellaneous festival and is the day when preparations begin to welcome the New Year's deity.

Preparations for the New Year include preparing Kadomatsu and Shimenawa, sweeping away soot, and preparing for the New Year. This also includes putting up New Year decorations such as Hagoita and Hamayumi. It is said that it is good to display them for about a month until Kosho-gatsu on January 15th, as it will protect you from misfortune during the New Year.

◆ New Year's decorations to be displayed together with Hina dolls and May decorations ◆

Depending on the region and the household, some families display New Year's decorations at the same time as Hina dolls and May decorations.

This means that the Hina dolls will be put up for display less than two weeks later, in early February.

Even in this case, it is a good idea to put away the hagoita during the Little New Year and then put it back up when you put up the Hina dolls.

Generally, it is considered bad luck to leave seasonal items on display, but since it is a lucky item, it is said that there is no problem with leaving it on display all year round.
However, if you don't mean to display it all year round, I think it would be better to display and take down the items according to the changing seasons in order to reflect the original meaning of "Osekku."

The essence of the customs and festivals of each season is based on organizing your life for that season and transitioning into a new one. I hope that you will use each season as an opportunity to take care of your family and yourself, and to reevaluate your lifestyle, while feeling the season and culture of the time.
