Iyo One-Sword Carving Nagumo
Iyo Ittobori is a traditional craft of Dogo Ehime that has been passed down as a family skill for three generations from the first generation, and is handcrafted one by one with the skills of a craftsman from the beginning of the process to the painting.
Ittobori is a woodcarving technique that expresses the shape of an object concisely. The "itto" in ittobori does not refer to a single sword, but to the "simple" shape. Nagumo wooden dolls are characterized by the texture and feel of the wood carved out with various chisels, and the warmth of the wood, which has a gentle atmosphere created by the unique pale coloring.
His works include not only seasonal decorations but also items for festivals, and he has many fans all over Japan.

Iyo Ittobori Unnan
(I'm so happy)

"Yunnan" is produced at the "Yunnan Workshop" in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture (formerly Iyo Province).
The first Nagumo was born in Dogo, Matsuyama in 1916. At the age of 13, he aspired to become a Buddhist sculptor (a sculptor of Buddhist statues), and established the "Iyo Folk Crafts Workshop" in Uomachi, Matsuyama, where he began working on creating wooden dolls. Alongside carving Buddhist statues, he also worked on creating wooden dolls using the traditional woodcarving technique of "Ittobori." This was the beginning of "Iyo Ittobori."
Ittobori is a woodcarving technique that removes unnecessary lines from the shape of an object to create a simple expression. The "itto" in ittobori does not mean one sword, but rather a "simple" shape.
Works created using this technique are simple and have a deep flavor, directly conveying the sharpness of the carving knife.
The technique is passed on to the second generation Nagumo (Nishikawa Ryuichi).
Upon graduating from high school in 1966, he began studying under the first Nagumo.
In 1824, he took the name Nagumo.
With the theme of "The Four Seasons of Japan and Wooden Dolls," he continues to create his own unique works while inheriting the spirit of his predecessors.
Currently, at the Nagumo Studio in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture (formerly Iyo Province), sculptures are made with refined lines.
He creates works with a new feel that combine precision and boldness with delicate and soft coloring.

Lean design
All Iyo Ittobori pieces are made by hand.
All of Nagumo's works are made by hand by experienced craftsmen. Inheriting the style of the first Buddhist sculptor, the compact and uncluttered scenes can be displayed anywhere.
The wood used is hiba, which has a soft, beautiful grain and a fragrant aroma.
The gentle scent of natural wood envelops you in a warm atmosphere.

<Wood Carving>
The width and thickness of the wood is adjusted using a woodworking machine. The outer corners of the doll are then removed.
<Carving>
The two-step process of rough carving and detailed finishing is carried out carefully using over a dozen types of knives and chisels.
After carving Hina dolls, the head part is polished to a soft surface.

Japanese and Yunnanese
Unique gentle colors

The coloring process is divided into two stages: applying the base coat and then finishing the details. Over twenty different types of brushes are skillfully used to carefully color even the smallest details.
Finally, eyes are added and Nagumo's wooden doll is complete.
From traditional colors to modern pale hues, the designs are typical of Yunnan, yet are elegant and Japanese, and blend well with modern interiors.

A special doll

The dolls made in the Yunnan workshop are very delicate, so they are not varnished or otherwise coated so that you can enjoy the beauty of the cypress wood.
Please be aware that the face, which is finished in pure white, is particularly prone to getting dirty.
In order to make the most of the natural wood grain, you can also enjoy the scent of cypress.
To prevent distortion of the paulownia box and fading of the doll, we recommend that you avoid placing the doll in places where it will be directly exposed to the air conditioner's breeze or near a window or other location exposed to direct sunlight.
Since this product uses water-based pigments, please be careful not to touch it with wet or dirty hands.
Please do not wipe the doll with a wet towel.
When storing, please lightly remove dust with a duster or similar and avoid storing the product in extremely humid or extremely dry places.
■Hiba Tree■
Nagumo Studio's works are made from Japanese cypress, which has a dense and beautiful grain and is a material that is very suitable for carving.
[What is Hiba?]
Hiba belongs to the cypress family and contains a compound called hinokiol, making it extremely resistant to decay and termites. Its beautiful grain means it is used for decorative pillars, doors, and window frames in Japanese-style rooms, as well as for paneling that is applied to interior walls to give the feel of wood, as building materials, for Wajima lacquerware, and for Aomori bent wood boxes.
[Hiba has the following benefits]
"Mental stabilizing effect" As is known from forest bathing, a walk through the forest can be very calming. Similarly, hiba oil has the effect of relieving stress that occurs in daily life. "Deodorizing effect" The antibacterial properties of hiba oil not only prevent the growth of germs, but also prevent the bad odors that germs give off. "Insect repellent effect" It contains ingredients called hinokiol and chamel B, which are not found in other tree species. These ingredients have the power to repel pests such as termites, mites, and cockroaches, and also have the excellent characteristic of being resistant to moisture and corrosion.
Iyo Ichitodobori Unnan has the flavor of a work of art that sets it apart from mass-produced items.
These high-quality items, chosen with an adult's perspective, are timeless and are festival decorations that you will want to display even after your child has grown up healthy and become an adult.
Please enjoy this wonderful Tango Festival that will bring smiles to the faces of your whole family for years to come.
