Artistic Nishikigoi Drawn by Japanese Painter Shunho Tokunaga.


"Kenjo Tezome Yuzen no Koi Kyo-Nishiki" realistically depicts the elegant form of Nishikigoi, drawn by the hand of Japanese painter Shunho Tokunaga. The unique coloration of Nishikigoi is dyed with a seven-color gradation, and fan-shaped gold accents adorn the entire scales. To make them resemble real Nishikigoi, each black, red, and blue carp is dyed with a different pattern. The windsock, with a theme of water and sky, features an ancient Japanese indigo gradation scattered with auspicious cranes. The material is a special three-dimensional interwoven fabric. This new material shines in a silvery-white color when illuminated by the sun.

　



 　

　


Shunho Tokunaga, the founder of Tokunaga Koinobori,
is a leading Japanese painter in Okayama.

 

Under the tutelage of Itō Shinsui, famous for his Bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), Shunho Tokunaga created unprecedented elegant and graceful koinobori with a rare worldview using the delicate brushwork characteristic of Japanese painting, sending shockwaves through the industry.

His representative koinobori works include "Keishuku no Koi Kitcho" and "Kenjo Tezome Yuzen no Koi Kyo-Nishiki." These immensely popular works have been long-sellers that transcend eras.

　





　
Many people associate "Tokunaga Koinobori" with "Kyo-Nishiki," a carp streamer that has continued to be a long-seller since its launch, with a design that has not faded over time.
The polyester jacquard fabric is light and lively, with a powerful presence that makes it swim well. Gold foil is added along the scales, and combined with the luster and color of the fabric, it creates an even more three-dimensional and powerful impression. As the name "Yuzen" suggests, the classical aspect and the hand-printing by artisans recreating the "Nishikigoi" painted by a Japanese artist beautifully showcase tradition. Its presence and elegance are sure to be considered a universal symbol of koinobori.

The "Kyo-Tsuru fukinagashi" (Kyoto crane windsock) features shades of blue with a scattering of cranes, a simple design that perfectly balances the vibrant colors of Kyo-Nishiki. Since it uses a two-stripe blue design, it is generally recommended to use blue for family crests and names. This creates a powerful koinobori with a blue gradient that seems to emerge from the sky, swaying and fluttering above. The white areas of the fabric shimmer with a silvery-white luster, making the family crest appear to float.

　

　

Kyo-Nishiki Swimming Around the World


1992 / Antarctica

With the hopes of the people from "Kohitsuji-en" in Maizuru City entrusted to them, the Kyo-Tsuru fukinagashi (Kyoto crane windsock) and Kyo-Nishiki koinobori, adorned with messages, were flown. With the cooperation of the 32nd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, the children's dream came true, and carp streamers fluttered in Antarctica. Upon hearing that "carp were swimming in the sky," Belgian team members also came to watch, and koinobori swam in Antarctica for the first time.

　



　
1996 / France

"Tokunaga Koi, Swimming in Paris" – Presented at the '96 Paris Collection by Japanese designer Shinichiro Arakawa, residing in Paris. Koinobori, a traditional Japanese cultural element, was vividly showcased through a global fashion show. Tokunaga Koi streamers adorned by models gracefully danced on stage, captivating the audience.
　
　
2003 / France

In May 2003, the "Centre Culturel Franco-Japonais" in Paris, which introduces Japanese culture to France, held "Koinobori 2003" to convey a wish for peace. Approximately 1,000 koinobori were flown in various locations across Paris for about a month, sharing Japanese traditional culture and the wish for peace with the people of France.
