Artistic koi carp, painted by Japanese artist Tokunaga Shunho.

"Kenjo Some Yuzen no Koi Kyo-Nishiki" realistically depicts elegant koi carp through the brushwork of Japanese painter Tokunaga Shunho. The unique colors of the koi carp are rendered with a seven-color gradation dye, and the entire scales are adorned with fan-shaped gold. To further emulate the appearance of real koi, each black, red, and blue carp is dyed with a different pattern. The streamer, themed after water and sky, features an ancient Japanese indigo gradation with auspicious cranes scattered throughout. The material is a special three-dimensional woven fabric that, when exposed to sunlight, gleams with a silver-white luster.

Tokunaga Shunho, founder of Tokunaga Koinobori,
is a prominent Japanese painter representing Okayama.

Mentored by Ito Shinsui, famous for his bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women), Shunho created novel, elegant koinobori with a unique world view, using the delicate brushwork characteristic of Japanese painting, thereby making a significant impact on the industry.

His representative koinobori works include "Keishuku no Koi Kiccho" and "Kenjo Some Yuzen no Koi Kyo-Nishiki". These highly popular works have been long-selling across generations.

Many people associate "Tokunaga Koinobori" with "Kyo-Nishiki," a long-selling koinobori that has maintained its design integrity since its launch. The polyester jacquard woven fabric is light and lively, creating an impressive and free-swimming display. The gold leaf is applied along the scales, and combined with the fabric's luster and colors, it enhances the three-dimensionality and dynamism. True to its "Yuzen" name, the traditional hand-printing by artisans, reproducing the "Nishiki Koi" painted by a Japanese artist, upholds tradition and radiates beauty. Its presence and elegance are undoubtedly a universal symbol of koinobori.

The "Kyozuru Streamer" features a simple design with cranes in shades of blue, providing a perfectly balanced complement to the vibrant colors of the Kyo-Nishiki. Since it's a blue-hued streamer, incorporating a family crest or name in blue will allow the blue gradation to flutter and shimmer as if the sky is rising above the impressive koinobori. The white areas of the fabric shimmer with a silvery-white luster, making the family crest appear to float.

Kyo-Nishiki swimming globally

1992 / Antarctica

With the hopes of the people from "Kohitsujien" in Maizuru City, the Kyozuru streamer and Kyo-Nishiki koinobori were signed with messages. With the cooperation of the 32nd Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, the children's dreams were realized, and koinobori fluttered in Antarctica. Upon hearing that "carp are swimming in the sky," Belgian expedition members also came to see, and koinobori swam in Antarctica for the first time.

1996 / France

"Tokunaga Koi, swimming in Paris." Presented at the '96 Paris Collection by Japanese designer Shinichiro Arakawa, who lives in Paris. Koinobori, a traditional Japanese culture, was vividly showcased through this global fashion show, and Tokunaga Koi, worn by models, gracefully danced on stage, captivating the audience.

2003 / France

In May 2003, the "Japan-France Cultural Center" in Paris, which introduces Japanese culture, held "Koinobori 2003" with a wish for peace. For about one month, 1,000 koinobori were flown in various parts of Paris, conveying traditional Japanese culture and the wish for peace to the people of France.
