A collaboration between tradition and art
We have started selling "Mitsuhashi Jun's Carp Streamers" as the second release from "Atelier".
We have combined the traditional Japanese culture of carp streamers with art to create a new carp streamer, developed in collaboration with dyeing artist Jun Mitsuhashi.
Mitsuhashi Jun's warm style of painting, with its soft colors, has created new value for carp streamers that has never been seen before, while still respecting tradition.
This colorful and warm carp streamer looks as if it has jumped out of the artwork.
A softly curved, plump and warm carp streamer
Although it has a typical carp streamer shape, it has no dorsal fin and is finished in a simple style, but its unique form is still attractive, with soft curves and a large tail fin.
By sewing the tail, it is easier for air to accumulate in the stomach, which gives the fish its characteristic plump shape when swimming.
A modern carp streamer that respects tradition
The appeal of Mitsuhashi Jun's work is the modern yet Japanese motifs and use of colors, resulting in modern carp streamers that are respectful of tradition.
The gentle touch and soft colors look great in any home design, whether Japanese, Western or modern.
To connect the carp streamers that fly outside to the future
<Limited sale of 3m set only>
Due to the declining birthrate and housing conditions, carp streamers are becoming smaller and smaller, and the original sight of carp streamers swimming outside is becoming less common.
I believe that the original form of carp streamers is carp streamers swimming gracefully in the sky. The purpose of this project is to explore new designs for carp streamers that can fit into modern architecture, while thinking about carp streamers that can be passed down to the future so that the scenery of carp streamers swimming on Children's Day will not disappear.
This time, we will only be selling 3m sets, as we want people to enjoy watching the carp streamers swimming outside at home.
We asked dye artist Jun Mitsuhashi to help us come up with a new design. While using traditional wax-resist dyeing techniques, he is also known for his wide range of work, not only on two-dimensional surfaces but also in installations and sculptures. We felt that his delicate and gentle sense of color would be perfect for creating a new carp streamer design.
The warm form created by the soft curves and colorful colors were devised by Jun Mitsuhashi.
By choosing from a number of design drawings and combining them, we created a new carp streamer.
Soft brushstrokes and warm colors
In order to reproduce the soft brushstrokes and warm colors that are the charm of Mitsuhashi Jun's work, we did not use the stencil dyeing method that is often used for carp streamers, but instead attempted to reproduce the colorful hues and shades of color.
The result is a carp streamer with an attractive, rich color scheme that contrasts with the powerful traditional stencil dyeing.
Carp streamer production scene - from hand to hand -
The appeal of Mitsuhashi Jun's work is the modern yet Japanese motifs and use of colors, resulting in modern carp streamers that are respectful of tradition.
The gentle touch and soft colors look great in any home design, whether Japanese, Western or modern.
