Traditional wood-grained Hina dolls

Kimekomi is a technique in which grooves are made in the wood of the body and fabric is embedded into the grooves.
This is an adorable doll with a sculpted torso and a plump, hand-painted face.
It is fascinating to see how the facial expressions change depending on how they are drawn.

Gorgeous costume made of Nishijin brocade

Kimono fabrics used for Kimekomi are Yuzen-dyed fabrics and Nishijin-ori obi fabrics. The kimonos are characterized by their gentle colors that evoke the arrival of spring.

[About Tougyoku]
The history of Higashitama Kobo is intertwined with the history of Iwatsuki, the town of dolls.
Iwatsuki, which flourished as a castle town and post town since the Edo period, is blessed with paulownia wood and water that are ideal for making dolls, and has now developed into a town boasting the highest doll production volume in Japan. During the Kaei era, Totsuka Ryunosuke, the court physician to the lord of Iwatsuki Castle, made dolls as a hobby in addition to his medical practice, and when he presented one of his creations to the lord, he was given the name "Azumatama" along with words of praise. The name of this venerable doll craftsman, Azumatama, has been passed down from generation to generation, and is still in use today by the sixth generation of doll craftsman, Azumatama.
