A Collaboration of Tradition and Art
The second installment of "Atelier" is "Mitsuhashi Jun's Koinobori," now available for purchase.
We collaborated with dye artist Mitsuhashi Jun to fuse the traditional Japanese culture of koinobori with art, resulting in a new koinobori design.
Mitsuhashi Jun's soft colors and warm painting style bring a new value to koinobori, building upon tradition.
These koinobori are colorful and warm, as if they've sprung directly from a work of art.
Softly Curved, Puffy, and Warm Koinobori
While maintaining the shape of a koinobori, we've eliminated the dorsal fin and kept the design simple, but the charming, distinctive form features soft curves and a large caudal fin. By stitching the tail, air easily accumulates in the belly, allowing for a puffy and characteristic shape when swimming.
Modern Koinobori rooted in Tradition
Mitsuhashi Jun's works are characterized by their modern yet Japanese motifs and color palettes, which allowed us to create a modern koinobori that builds upon tradition. The gentle touch and soft colors blend beautifully with both Japanese and Western styles, and fit well with contemporary home designs.
Connecting Koinobori Swimming Outdoors to the Future
<Limited Sale of 3m Set Only>
Due to declining birthrates and housing conditions, koinobori are becoming smaller, and the sight of them swimming outdoors, in their original form, is diminishing. We believe that koinobori gracefully swimming in the sky is their true essence. To ensure that the sight of koinobori swimming on Children's Day does not disappear and to connect them to the future, the goal of this project was to seek new koinobori designs that would suit modern architecture.
With the desire for people to see koinobori swimming outside their homes, this sale is limited to the 3m set only.
To conceive new designs, we commissioned dye artist Jun Mitsuhashi. While employing traditional batik dyeing techniques, he expands his work broadly to include not only flat surfaces but also installations and three-dimensional pieces. We believed that his delicate and gentle sense of color was perfect for creating new koinobori designs.
The warm forms with soft curves and colorful hues were conceived by Mitsuhashi Jun. We considered combinations from numerous design sketches, resulting in these new koinobori.
Gentle Brushstrokes and Warm Colors
To reproduce the charm of Jun Mitsuhashi's works, with their gentle brushstrokes and warm colors, we avoided the traditional stencil dyeing commonly used for koinobori and attempted to recreate the colorful hues and shades. The result is a koinobori with a rich spectrum of colors, a striking contrast to the powerful, traditional stencil dyeing.
Koinobori Production Scene - From Hand to Hand -
Mitsuhashi Jun's works are characterized by their modern yet Japanese motifs and color palettes, which allowed us to create a modern koinobori that builds upon tradition. The gentle touch and soft colors blend beautifully with both Japanese and Western styles, and fit well with contemporary home designs.
