Issho mochi is a traditional celebration for a child's first birthday, praying for their healthy growth.

The word "issho" (one sho, a unit of volume) is a homophone for "lifetime," and when combined with the celebratory mochi (rice cake), it carries wishes like "may they never be without food for their whole life" and "may they be healthy for their whole life."

The round, flat shape of issho mochi also symbolizes "may they live a harmonious life."

During the Issho Mochi celebration, some children may not be able to stand or may cry.
